All of the effects you describe can happen to jockeys- and a great many of them do. It's also a well known, though little publicized fact that many if not most jockeys suffer from serious eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulemia, at some point in their careers- and some of them battle these terrible afflictions their entire LIVES, including long after they stop racing.
This is yet another facet of the racing industry which desperately needs to be overhauled and rethought, not to mention restructured. If the horses were older and more mature when they raced, and had stronger bones and limbs, we would not need to impose such extreme weight requirements on jockeys, and the people who make their living this way would be far healthier and stronger. There would also be far fewer jockeys who suffered from eating disorders and the complications these disorders cause, which in many cases are life threatening by themselves. In addition, the incidence of disorders caused by poor eating habits, such as diabetes ( yes, I know diabetes is also at least partially hereditary, but poor diet plays a big role in its development, at least in some people) and thyroid disorders, as well as certain types of cancer, would drop if jockeys were allowed to carry more weight on their bodies when they worked.
The present situation which most jockeys work under right now is appalling, there is no doubt of that. These people are treated like cannon fodder a lot of the time, rather than as the true professionals they are. We would not even have racing if it were not for them- but everybody seems to get great pleasure out of bashing a lot of them. Just take a look at what PETA tried to do the Eight Belles' jockey as proof of this. This was a 19 year old kid from Panama who'd never done anything wrong in his life, and all of sudden, he gets blamed for an accident which was in no way his fault, JUST BECAUSE HE HAPPENED TO BE THERE when it happened. Now what kind of sense does THAT MAKE, might I ask?? Shooting the messenger because you don't like the message solves no one's problems, but try telling that to the people who run PETA and other groups like it.
Enough said- this topic just makes me upset and sad, when I think about it too much. Racing as a whole desperately needs to be reformed and brought into the modern age- but I don't see that happening any time soon, at least not while there is so much money to be made by cheating and doing illegal, dangerous things.
