I know someone who did that. They saved about $2000 from getting it done locally. Unfortunately they had to get it done all over again because they used very cheap material and it ended up costing them more after having to get it done twice. If you're looking for a short term solution to a good smile it might be a good option but in the long run I think you will have to get it done. He had it done in Puerto Vallarta by a Doctor Jimenez (not sure on the spelling)

You shouldn't have any problems, as long as you make sure it is the same book, same edition. The only hardcover textbooks that I have ever had are math textbooks. I was under the impression that most textbooks were softcover, but that may not be the case.
Even if they are different editions, you may want to ask your professor if he/she cares about that; a lot of times, professors don't care.
Soft cover books would naturally be cheaper than hard covers, so that is nothing out of the ordinary. A lot of times, you can find really cheap books online, so I wouldn't be too concerned with the price, as long as you think the books are the same. They may even be international editions.
