There are many way to do this, depending on what the story is about but if you want it to be dramatic or shock then don't make your character fall asleep or you will give the game away too early. Instead start a new chapter and relate what is happening in the nightmare and when it reaches the scary part or the climax have your character wake up in a sweat or shouting or whatever you want him to do. That way you will keep the reader guessing and that has got to be a good thing. Whatever you decide good luck with it.
